Community

At the heart of communities.

Our sites sit at the heart of the communities they serve, and we are passionate about giving back to those communities. We have donated more than £200,000 to local and community charities since 2019.

Each forecourt donates at least £1,000 per annum to local causes, such as PATCH in Pembrokeshire, which relieves the effects of poverty for individuals and families.

During 2020, we provided over £60,000 in support to local organisations, with over £30,000 of food and drink donated to Withybush Hospital staff during the first lockdown.

For further information and how to apply for funding, see Ascona Giving Blog entry.

Ascona Group supports MADL – Making a Difference Locally

Making a Difference Locally is a charity supporting local communities. Independently-owned convenience stores that are partners of Nisa Retail are the only retailers that can participate.

The charity helps our stores give back to charities in the local area. MADL was established in 2008 to help independent retailers support local causes they care about, cementing their position at the heart of their communities.

Since its inception in 2008, over 14,500 donations have been paid to local communities, totalling almost £10.5m.

How does MADL work?

Every time a store purchases a Co-Op branded product, NISA takes a percentage of the cost and deposits it into the MADL donation bank for the store.

Each year, we decide which of our local charities or support groups we wish to donate to. The beneficiary can be local to one area or a national charity such as Marie Curie, where the local branch would then receive the donation.

Since the commencement of Ascona Group’s partnership with NISA in 2020, over £2,490 has been raised for beneficiaries.

Donations have been paid to an Air Ambulance branch in the locality of one of our Ascona retail outlets.

Sustainability:

Our industry sits at the forefront of the transitioning to a more sustainable future.

We are currently developing our own sustainability strategy which will govern our relationship with EVs, charge points, battery storage and green energy generation for the next ten years.

Further details on this strategy are available here.
